Anniesland Driving Test Centre: Prepare for the Roads, Not a Memorised Route

Anniesland can move quickly between busy main roads, complex junctions and quieter residential streets. That makes it useful preparation because the learner has to recognise when the road has changed and change the driving with it.

I would use local practice and route videos to understand those decisions — never to promise that the examiner will take the same turns.

What I would work on around Anniesland

On larger roads the challenge is often early lane planning: read signs and road markings before the junction becomes urgent, use mirrors before changing position and avoid rescuing a late decision with a sudden movement.

On residential roads the challenge changes. Parked cars, restricted views, pedestrians and meeting traffic often mean you need less speed and more forward planning. A learner who drives both environments in exactly the same way is missing the point.

Anniesland Cross: the problem is not just “which lane?”

Learners can become so focused on the lane that they stop processing speed, mirrors, traffic lights, pedestrians and other vehicles. The better approach is to build the plan early enough that lane choice becomes only one part of the decision.

If you realise you are in the wrong lane, continue safely. Taking a different road is not automatically a test failure; creating danger to save the route can be.

Use route videos as observation practice

Third-party Anniesland route videos can be useful because they show real local road situations. They are not official DVSA routes and should not be treated as a script.

A current example is “Anniesland Driving test routes #16”. Watch the road markings, approach speeds, mirror use, pedestrian risk and how the driver responds when the environment changes.

The question I would ask while watching

If the examiner sent me the opposite way here, could I still drive safely?

If the answer is no, you have learned the route rather than the driving. Local knowledge should make you better at reading roads, not dependent on one sequence of turns.
