Baillieston Driving Test Centre: Prepare for the Decisions, Not the Directions

Baillieston can combine business-park roads, residential streets, larger roundabouts, traffic lights and faster roads. The challenge is not remembering where the examiner might turn. It is recognising what each road needs from you.

That is how I would use local practice: as a way of building transferable driving, not route memory.

The roundabout mistake often starts before the roundabout

When a learner ends up in the wrong lane, the visible mistake happens at the roundabout. But the real problem may have started several seconds earlier: the sign was read late, mirrors were delayed, speed stayed too high and there was suddenly no thinking time left.

Practise the whole approach. Read early, understand the direction, check what is around you, reduce speed progressively and arrive with enough time to assess the traffic.

Then the road can change completely

A residential road asks different questions. Parked vehicles can narrow the usable space, junction views can be restricted and meeting traffic needs to be planned before the gap disappears. The correct response is often a lower speed and earlier decision, not simply “keep making progress”.

Use a Baillieston route video properly

There are current third-party Baillieston route videos on YouTube. They are not official DVSA routes, but they can be useful observation practice.

One current example is “Baillieston Driving test route #2 Glasgow 2026”. Watch for lane planning, mirror timing, speed changes and how the driver creates space.

A better readiness test than learning another route

Drive unfamiliar roads in the wider area with fewer instructor prompts. If your lane choice, observation and speed stay reliable even when you do not know the next junction, that tells you far more about readiness.
